A Reflection Ritual To Help You Achieve Any Goal

A Special Guest Post From Sarah Starrs!

I love how inspiring Jemma’s posts are. Whether it’s selling her artwork or growing her blog, she seems to work tirelessly going after her dreams. So if you read her blog, I’m sure you’re an inspiring lady with big dreams, too.

I KNOW what it’s like to want something desperately but still never seem to make it happen. That’s why I want to share a simple tool that you can use to help achieve any goal.

It can be busy to keep all of my projects going while also working a full-time job. I write my blog, work with clients one-to-one, create digital products, and I have a podcast and ecourse that are both launching next week. I'm also married, have a busy social life, and prioritize making time for myself. This might sound like an impossibly busy schedule but I've learned a couple of very simple tools that allow me to keep moving forward without getting burnt out. And you can apply them to any goal you might be working towards.

This year I promised myself that I would go balls-to-the-wall making my big dreams happen. By this time next year, I want to be running my business full-time. I've made enormous strides towards this goal. I've achieved some pretty big things in the past: starting my own magazine, traveling across Europe, and moving to the other side of the world, to name a few. But this year has been different. I've kept up my momentum in a way that I never have in the past.

Often I'd dive head first into a new project or goal and go full steam ahead for a couple of weeks and then it would peter out. But not this time. I've gotten planning and reflecting down to an art. By implementing short, simple reflection rituals every week I'm able to keep myself focused, celebrate my accomplishments, note where I can improve, realign as necessary, and plan my next action steps.

This is a deceivingly simple ritual that has an enormous impact. I've outlined how to get the most out of this process below. And because planning is more fun with pretty stationary, I've created a free printable that walks you through the exact reflection questions I use to check in with myself. Just pop over to my website if you'd like to download it.

Create a sacred time.

Choosing to do your reflection at the same time every week will build it into your routine and make it something you prioritize. Carve out 30 minutes and recognize it as an important act of self-care and a crucial building block for your dreams.

I like to do my reflections on Sundays, usually in the early evening with the week still fresh in my mind. It's also the perfect time to set myself up for the week ahead. But the key is to find a time that will consistently work for your schedule.

Add a sense of ritual.

Creating a sense of ritual around your routine will make it special and also something you look forward to.

I like to brew a mug of hot cocoa, light a candle, and sit down with my favourite pink pen to think about the days that have just past and plan the week ahead. This has become one of my favourite times of the week and adding in these small rituals has made it feel sacred.

Reflect on your achievements.
Actually write down everything that you accomplished this week, whether they're items from your to-do lists, starting a new book, trying a new creative medium, cooking healthy meals everyday, or anything else that seems worthy of note. Think about what you learned, anything you changed about your routines, or events that were particularly interesting. Write it all down and take a moment to feel proud of everything you accomplished.

Think about what you could have done better or whether you need to realign your vision.

Reflecting also allows us to see where we could have done better to make progress with our goals. How could you have spent your time more effectively? What would you like to let go of? Could you have reacted differently to a situation? Make a note of these instances and decide what you would like to do differently next week.

Create a plan for the following week

You can use your reflections to guide your plans for the following week. When we create a plan we're more likely to follow through, and when we build this into our reflection ritual.
Most of us work best when we have one main focus for the week and dedicate our actions towards it. Identify what one thing you could do this week that would move your goal forward the most. Then break that down into bite-sized tasks and schedule them in your calendar. You'll also want to move any outstanding to-dos from last week into your schedule if you still think that they're important.

Creating a weekly ritual reflection has drastically changed my life for the better. I now achieve my goals more quickly and with more ease. This process helps keep me focused and motivated. Whether you want to start an art journal or a magazine, taking time to plan and reflect each week is one simple, powerful step that will help you get there.

But just sitting down and telling yourself to "plan and reflect" each week might make your mind go completely blank.

I've put together these worksheets that walk you through the exact reflection questions and planning steps I use to work towards creating each of my dreams. Plus, they're pretty and flowery! You can just hop over to my website if you'd like to download them.

And while you're there, be sure to tell me what goals you're working on. I'd love to hear!
xo,
Sarah

I’m Living A Pretty Colourful Life.

There are a few things I want you to know about this post guys.

1. It took me a lot longer to write than expected, because I kept getting side tracked every time I found hilarious photos.

2. Writing this post wasn't just preaching about something; because it made me FEEL what I was writing about (You’ll understand this in a moment).

3. It made me realise I'm always going to be awesome. And so are you.

Whenever I think about growing up, I get pretty scared. Scared that I'm not feeling quite like a ‘grown up’ yet, scared that I haven’t got kids like most of my friends, scared that I don’t even know if I want kids, and scared that I’ll change and become this boring person who isn't living life to the fullest. That last one actually terrifies me.

I was thinking about all of this when I discovered The Colour Report*, a survey conducted by McCarthy and Stone; the UK's number one developer of privately owned retirement properties. WOAH WOAH WOAH, slow your roll sunshine. I see you all switching off there. Come on, it's me. I have a point, I swear. It's a good one actually, so stay with me.

The Colour Report is a huge, detailed survey that McCarthy and Stone took from more than 2500 retirees; and they discovered some pretty interesting things. For example, 59% of people aged 65-74 remain sexually active with nearly one in five people aged 75+ still having regular sex. Ohhh yes, you read that right. And 14% of over 75s surveyed still shop at leading fashion stores like Zara and Topshop. That's right, we'll still be swanning around Topshop swatching lippies well into our seventies, you better believe!

But the most important one to me was that 84% of retirees said having a laugh with their friends keeps them feeling young. How amazing is that?
First of all it gives me a little bit of hope, I mean.. if I can still be having a laugh and feeling young when I'm a retiree, what have I got to be worried about? Secondly, I wonder in what ways I'll be having a laugh?...

Still getting pissed with my mates while sat around 'Instagramming' our wine glasses? Maybe.
Drinking random shots at Revs to ensure we've tried every single one? Possibly (oh god I hope!)
Insisting we still visit the Disney store? Okay maybe not. Maybe. I dunno, we'll see.

I feel like I've been given a little bit of a magic gift though really. If I just make sure I'm always having a laugh with my friends, I'm sorted! I'll have stolen Peter Pan's ability to stay young (sort of..)! They've basically proven that the most important things are happiness, friendships and living life to the fullest. I'm all about this. I can get rid of this crazy notion that I'll suddenly have to change who I am at some point.

I have such a wide group of friends, especially since I started blogging, from all across the world. I talk to my friends every single day, whether it be online, on the phone, writing letters, video calls, etc. Friendships are one of the most important things in life and keep you fun, and 100% yourself. After all, don't we all feel completely rejuvenated after catching up with friends? - Unless of course it involved Vodka, which in that case is understandable if you're left a little worse for wear ;)

So yes, I get scared about growing up, but The Colour Report really did make me feel a little better to be honest. It's all about reminding us we don't need to have this dated idea of retirement that we all seem to go by. There's no endings, no boring life, no rules. I'm still going to be me! I'll probably still be dying my hair all the colours of the rainbow. I'm still going to be chatting with my friends every day and I'm still going to make happiness my number one priority.

I genuinely do feel better about the whole shebang after reading up on The Colour Report. Oh, FYI you guys you can find some pretty hilarious statistics in there, well worth a peep.

So, now you guys.
Do you ever think about what you'll be like in years to come? How will you ensure you're still living life to the fullest? :) Let me know!

*This post was written in collaboration with McCarthy and Stone. All views are my own (always!) and I only post about issues/topics that genuinely interest me.

Zoeva Brushes & A Big Thank You

zoeva rose gold brushes

Recently I was amazed to win a giveaway from the lovely Claire over at Fine and Dandy (you all know Claire, right?). I was absolutely shocked as I never expected to win, as you can imagine. However, destiny wasn't on our side. You see, Claire had the brushes ready and waiting at home while her giveaway was on, and when it came to packaging them up... she couldn't find them. After searching for literally days, the poor girl got in touch with me crying and so upset. She thought that her or her boyfriend had probably accidentally thrown the box away, and she had been going crazy looking for it. When she spoke to me it was obvious how upset she was, and on top of all that she was worried about looking 'dodgy' (her words!) as if she hadn't had them all along.

I was absolutely fine, obviously! I hadn't lost anything at all, it was poor Claire who was down lots of money, and nothing to show for it. I could completely understand why she was upset but I didn't want it to be that she felt any responsibility to me. I felt so bad on her!

After insisting to her that it was silly to even apologise (literally how absurd is that?), you can imagine my surprise when I came home a few days later to see a pretty package waiting for me!

I almost cried because I was so upset at the thought of Claire spending even more money, and got in touch with her immediately to try send them back to her. She wouldn't hear of it though and I couldn't believe the extent of her kindness. She had felt so awful that she had gone and ordered another set for me. This is both amazing and heartbreaking!

So here's my promise; I'm gonna love these brushes like they are my babies Claire! They are absolutely magnificent both to use and to look at, I can feel the quality with every use. I have already sent Claire a thank you letter which hopefully she will have received by now, and I plan on showing my thanks continually in as man ways as I can think of.

So let's start right now!
Please, everyone and anyone reading this; go visit Claire's blog, follow her, tweet her telling her how awesome she is, and generally aim to make her smile. She is one of the loveliest people I've known because of blogging and one of my best blogging friends.

THANK YOU!

Super Cute Box Review

As someone who is obsessed with everything kawaii and cute, you can imagine how thrilled I was when the lovely guys over at Super Cute Box offered to let me try out their service. I was sent July's box full of kawaii goodies, to see what I thought of the quality, products and general idea of this monthly subscription box overall. I couldn't wait to get started!

In July's box;

A Hello Kitty cable clip,
A Rilakkuma key cover,
A Rilakkuma set of 4 sticky notepads,
Doughnut socks,
Betti Confetti greetings cards,
This Material Culture deer pendant,
Cat in a box post it notes,
Gudetama plushie,
cute envelope set.

When I received July's box through my mail I was extremely happy to realise that they pack the boxes super slim, in order to make delivery even simpler for everyone! No need to have to sign for anything, be at home, or go pick anything up. The boxes are thin and lightweight so that they may be posted through doors or left in any postbox; brilliant!

As for July's items; yay! My first thought when I opened the box was all about the colour. Such bright pops of pinks, yellows and blues. I do love getting some colourful mail. I was thrilled to see Hello Kitty and Rilakkuma products in there as they are kawaii staples and you just can't NOT have them can you? Another thing that made me smile was seeing This Material Culture products included! The deer pendant is beautiful, well made, and they're from Liverpool! I love supporting small business; especially local ones.

I think my favourite items are the Rilakkuma sticky pads (because we all know I'm a stationary fiend!) and Gudetama plushie. I've not heard of Gudetama before, but apparently it's a popular kawaii character, and I can see why. This little cutie now has pride of place hooked onto my bag and he adds a little bit of sunshine to any outfit. Who could ever say that about an egg?!

And now the judgement bit. What do I truly think? Is this subscription box worth it, and would I buy it myself?
I already know I would love a subscription box like this coming through my door every month. Knowing there will always be a box full of cute surprises for me and a chance to keep my kawaii collection going strong are very tempting. I'll be honest with you, no lies; I thought the kitty in a box sticky notes were not needed. It's cute, but sticky notes were already included, and you can't actually write on these ones really, since they're so small. Definitely adorable, but I thought another item would have went down better. That being said, it does look cute on my desk, and I'm all about that Instagram effect.

I will definitely be signing up to this subscription service! As soon as pay day rolls around, I'll be looking forward to more surprises coming through my door. From only £15 a month, I think this is a great way to collect some cute items if kawaii is your thing.

What do you guys think? Will you be giving the Super Cute Box a try?

15 Things This Week

1. I tried a shot that was called 'Birthday Cake'; and yep it tasted like birthday cake. It was weird, but not bad.

2. I served the nicest old couple who complimented my tattoos and asked about them with genuine interest (and no judgement, which is rare).

3. Someone new has started in work and she's really nice, so that's cool.

4. I've pretty much planned my Halloween outfit, and I'm beyond excited for this.

5. Actually I've also planned our 'Autumn decor', that's how excited I am for Autumn.

6. I've enjoyed the rain so much this week; colouring, pj days, dark clouds, hats, umbrellas. I love it.

7. Gary and I both watched The Lizzie Maguire Movie for the first time together. We laughed at how cringey it was. Also I knew Paulo would end up being a tit.

8. I drunk Periscoped, and I'm still embarrassed.

9. I started reading Tina Fey's 'Bossypants' - I don't know why it's taken me so long, because I've loved her for years.

10. I'm thoroughly enjoying taking a break from certain responsibilities. Cutting down my schedule was seriously needed.

11. I've been browsing trips to London for November. I hope to spend a night or two there and meet some other bloggers! (Bloody expensive though).

12. I genuinely walked into a bar and said, 'Ooh it's so Instagram in here!' to my friends judgement. Fuck you Alex, I knew that photo would get a load of likes.

13. I've gotten a bunch of cute stuff in the mail this week, yay! Kawaii4lyf.

14. I've started a new mini art project, and I'm really excited about it!

15. I've got blog events this month and next month, yay! I'll be covering both on here, so keep an eye out.

How's your week been? :)

Struggling to be spontaneous, while dealing with anxiety.

I'm doing that thing right now, where you write without planning. Do you guys ever do that? It's extremely therapeutic, and I recommend it every now and again if you really just want to vent, have a casual chat or at least try to get across your current feelings. It's kind of nice. So bear with me today.

I'm hoping August is a really good one, filled with lots of joy and little adventures. Last week I had like 3 days in a row where I felt really down, and I couldn't figure out why. It weren't that oh so fantastic time of month where I'm always totes emosh, I had purposely quietened my schedule so I could have some free time, and I didn't have anything that was worrying me. In fact, things were pretty nifty. So what was up?

I think I've come to the realisation that I'm someone who always need to be busy, busy, busy. Whether it's working, blog stuff, seeing friends, going somewhere, doing something... whatever. That to-do list better be filled with stuff each day, or you can guarantee I'll start feeling down. So when I had cleared my schedule, although I really needed it (I'd been getting a tad stressed) I didn't plan anything to fill the gap. And it left me feeling lonely, bored, unfulfilled and super miserable. This isn't the best thing to discover about myself, as I'd like to learn to enjoy downtime obviously. But I think I've figured out a way to help myself a little.

On the fourth day, I made spontaneous plans to go out for drinks after work with my friend Alex. This is something I haven't done in SO LONG. I used to be really spontaneous, and I loved it. But for a while my anxiety has stopped me being my old spontaneous self really, and it's sucked. I worry I'll suddenly feel anxious or upset while I'm out, I panic that it's not pre-planned and I'm not sure what I'll be doing, and I just generally feel like bees are flying around my stomach by not sticking to a plan. Biting the bullet last week and just agreeing to go out after work, even though I knew I'd be tired, only have a small amount of money and have to catch up on social media work when I got home, was awesome. I had such a great time, had plenty of laughs, got too drunk, and seen someone I haven't seen in ages. We've made plans to do it again this week. I was left feeling so happy.

So anyway, I've figured out how to strike the perfect balance, maybe.
I need to schedule 'me' time, when I can do anything or nothing. BUT I also need to make a loose, casual plan for this time too, for things I might want to do during this 'me' time. That sounds super weird and OTT right? I know. But I think having SO MUCH to do for too long gets me stressed, and having NOTHING to do leaves me depressed. So I'm going to always try keep myself busy, even if busy means a scheduled Netflix day or quietly painting by myself. It just seems to help me.

And of course, I'm going to try be more spontaneous and say YES to every drunk adventure I can. It's good for me! Right? Right??

Do any of you have the same issues, needing to be busy or have a schedule all the time?
