A Reflection Ritual To Help You Achieve Any Goal

A Special Guest Post From Sarah Starrs!

I love how inspiring Jemma’s posts are. Whether it’s selling her artwork or growing her blog, she seems to work tirelessly going after her dreams. So if you read her blog, I’m sure you’re an inspiring lady with big dreams, too.

I KNOW what it’s like to want something desperately but still never seem to make it happen. That’s why I want to share a simple tool that you can use to help achieve any goal.

It can be busy to keep all of my projects going while also working a full-time job. I write my blog, work with clients one-to-one, create digital products, and I have a podcast and ecourse that are both launching next week. I'm also married, have a busy social life, and prioritize making time for myself. This might sound like an impossibly busy schedule but I've learned a couple of very simple tools that allow me to keep moving forward without getting burnt out. And you can apply them to any goal you might be working towards.

This year I promised myself that I would go balls-to-the-wall making my big dreams happen. By this time next year, I want to be running my business full-time. I've made enormous strides towards this goal. I've achieved some pretty big things in the past: starting my own magazine, traveling across Europe, and moving to the other side of the world, to name a few. But this year has been different. I've kept up my momentum in a way that I never have in the past.

Often I'd dive head first into a new project or goal and go full steam ahead for a couple of weeks and then it would peter out. But not this time. I've gotten planning and reflecting down to an art. By implementing short, simple reflection rituals every week I'm able to keep myself focused, celebrate my accomplishments, note where I can improve, realign as necessary, and plan my next action steps.

This is a deceivingly simple ritual that has an enormous impact. I've outlined how to get the most out of this process below. And because planning is more fun with pretty stationary, I've created a free printable that walks you through the exact reflection questions I use to check in with myself. Just pop over to my website if you'd like to download it.

Create a sacred time.

Choosing to do your reflection at the same time every week will build it into your routine and make it something you prioritize. Carve out 30 minutes and recognize it as an important act of self-care and a crucial building block for your dreams.

I like to do my reflections on Sundays, usually in the early evening with the week still fresh in my mind. It's also the perfect time to set myself up for the week ahead. But the key is to find a time that will consistently work for your schedule.

Add a sense of ritual.

Creating a sense of ritual around your routine will make it special and also something you look forward to.

I like to brew a mug of hot cocoa, light a candle, and sit down with my favourite pink pen to think about the days that have just past and plan the week ahead. This has become one of my favourite times of the week and adding in these small rituals has made it feel sacred.

Reflect on your achievements.
Actually write down everything that you accomplished this week, whether they're items from your to-do lists, starting a new book, trying a new creative medium, cooking healthy meals everyday, or anything else that seems worthy of note. Think about what you learned, anything you changed about your routines, or events that were particularly interesting. Write it all down and take a moment to feel proud of everything you accomplished.

Think about what you could have done better or whether you need to realign your vision.

Reflecting also allows us to see where we could have done better to make progress with our goals. How could you have spent your time more effectively? What would you like to let go of? Could you have reacted differently to a situation? Make a note of these instances and decide what you would like to do differently next week.

Create a plan for the following week

You can use your reflections to guide your plans for the following week. When we create a plan we're more likely to follow through, and when we build this into our reflection ritual.
Most of us work best when we have one main focus for the week and dedicate our actions towards it. Identify what one thing you could do this week that would move your goal forward the most. Then break that down into bite-sized tasks and schedule them in your calendar. You'll also want to move any outstanding to-dos from last week into your schedule if you still think that they're important.

Creating a weekly ritual reflection has drastically changed my life for the better. I now achieve my goals more quickly and with more ease. This process helps keep me focused and motivated. Whether you want to start an art journal or a magazine, taking time to plan and reflect each week is one simple, powerful step that will help you get there.

But just sitting down and telling yourself to "plan and reflect" each week might make your mind go completely blank.

I've put together these worksheets that walk you through the exact reflection questions and planning steps I use to work towards creating each of my dreams. Plus, they're pretty and flowery! You can just hop over to my website if you'd like to download them.

And while you're there, be sure to tell me what goals you're working on. I'd love to hear!
xo,
Sarah

Be Your Own Hero

Every day our lives are saturated by outside sources of inspiration, motivation and influence; which is a fantastic and beautiful thing. I feel a tremendous amount of gratitude for how easy it is to Google something when I need inspiration or ideas. When I'm working in my art journal it's almost natural for me to look up Pinterest inspiration boards, when I need blog post ideas there's about a thousand ways I can find them within seconds, and when I want to try a new makeup look, well, there's a whole industry out there to influence me.

Inspiration is wonderful when it happens, but the writer must develop an approach for the rest of the time. ~ Leonard Bernstein

This past month has seen me create more artwork, write more poetry, and take more photographs than I have in a long time. I have felt inspired and motivated, ready to take on so many different projects and goals. While you may think this is because I have opened up shop, started selling artwork and generally taking requests; it is actually the other way around. It is because of my inspiration that I have done these things. I seem to have tapped into a tiny, wonderful part of my brain responsible for giving me the drive I need. And while it almost certainly will not last forever, it is wonderful to have it for the time being.

So, how did I come by this? What am I doing? Perhaps I have a super fucking awesome Pinterest board which I'll link you all to now? Okay I do have awesome Pinterest boards, but no. The answer is much simpler, yet harder I'm afraid.

I decided what I wanted to do, and I did it.

I know, life changing stuff huh? I'm pretty sure you've heard that before, but it's okay, stick with me. I didn't watch some amazing inspiration speech, I didn't read a book that changed my outlook, I didn't have some 'Aha!' moment while in the shower. I simply woke one morning and found that I weren't completely happy with the day ahead. I knew that it wasn't going to be The Best Day Ever; and knowing that kind of scared me. I'm not saying I was unhappy, just to be clear. I have the great pleasure of living with and sharing my life with a man who makes me feel deliriously filled with joy, I have friends who I love and a lot to be thankful for. But I still knew it wasn't going to be particularly awesome that day, it would be 'normal'.

I got thinking about normal, and what we accept as habit and day to day expectations. I wondered if I'd look back at my life in fifty years and regret this moment I'm living in right now. Maybe I'll regret little things; not wearing my best clothes everyday, that make me feel awesome and colourful. Maybe I'll regret bigger things like not travelling more and seeing the world. I was wondering what I would regret for each particular day actually, and one day I decided to stop wondering. I knew I had to let my heart make some more of my daily decisions, that way maybe I wouldn't go as wrong and steer my life in a different direction.

So I wrote down what I wanted to do that day. I'm a To-Do list kinda girl at heart.
I wanted to cuddle Gary and laugh.
I wanted to do something creative.
I wanted to call my mum, and maybe check in with friends.

Nothing monumental happened that day; I started a small painting to pass some time, and it felt great. I believe Gary and I watched The Office (again), and laughed as we held hands and laid into each other. And I know I called my mum, and started a Snapchat war with a friend. All in all, a pretty basic day.

I went to bed very happy.
So when the next day came, I wrote down my list of things again. Not things that needed to be done, but things that I wanted from the day, and I've done it each day since.
Small changes have happened because of this tiny new way of approaching each day; I did not write a blog post when I didn't feel like it, I changed my hair again and I filled up my art journal a little more. Big changes have happened around here too. I quit my full time job that I liked, and took up a part time one somewhere, so that I have the time and freedom to pursue something I love. I began taking professional approaches to things I wanted to do for my career. I gained two official clients. I have painted and drawn people for pleasure, and also sometimes for money as well; which, when you think about it, is pretty powerful. There are people willing to pay me to do something that keeps me up at 3am because I can't bear to not be doing it.

I feel a little scared, and extremely hopeful.
I feel alive and a little more positive.
I feel in control too, which is hilarious because that's just asking for trouble, right?

But all in all, I feel like fifty years from now I might not have as many regrets. I might actually make some pretty brilliant choices now. I might end up doing okay. I can't say for sure, but I can say I'm less worried about it.

I'm still gonna read all the blog posts I can get my hands on about finding inspiration, and I'm gonna pin away anything that brings me motivation too.

But mostly, I'm going to stop looking for the world to bring something to me on a plate. I'm going to close my eyes, and let my mind see everything I need to see.

I'm going to be my own hero in this story.
Who will be the hero of your story?

8 Ways To Have A Great Day

rose flowers candle happy day great day

There's something about positive people; they are so infectious.

Even on a bad day, if I surround myself with the right people I can feel so much better about everything. Sometimes it's not always possible though; whether you're working from home, you haven't got time, or.. maybe you don't know anybody super positive. Even more reason for you to keep reading!

At the moment I'm feeling really happy; which is a combination of good people, creativity and having a plan. I'm hoping I can put this energy into sharing some things that have helped me, and passing on these positive vibes to you guys. Then in turn, maybe you will pass them on to someone else, and so on. We'll become a great, big, happy chain of smiles! (This sounded less hippy in my head).

So, what ensures a great day for me?

1. Being Creative.
It's no secret that I'm one of those creative types. I thrive in the world of the unknown, without rules or expectations. I find this to be one of the greatest sources of happiness for me, but I also think it would help even those of you who shy away from pencils, paints or crafts. If you can let yourself explore your creative side (and you do have one!) even just a little while, you'll feel so much better from it. Whether it's taking photographs, writing a short story, making a card for someone or decorating a room; being creative will give your mind much needed 'play time', and also help you feel more focused when it's time to get back to 'work'.

2. Getting Physical.
(Ooer!) As much as I moan until I'm blue in the face, getting a little red in the face actually makes me feel good. Any sort of physical activity that gets my blood pumping makes me feel alive, awake and ready to take on anything! If I have a day where I'm sat on my arse for too long (right now..) it can leave me feeling claustrophobic, and a little down. So that's it, I'm off to do some chores! (after this post..)

3. Being Social.
We all know the joys of spending time with friends and chatting over social media. But I don't mean wasting time on there, which I'm guilty of sometimes. I mean useful, stimulating and refreshing experiences talking to others, not scrolling constantly through Twitter. Call up a friend and arrange to make plans one day for something special, interview someone who inspires you, take the time to spoil your other half. Just by making our social interaction that little bit different, we get more out of it in a fantastic way.

4. Being Prepared.
In some ways, I can be very 'Type A'. But being organised, methodical and making a plan can be so calming and therapeutic, especially if I have deadlines. If you start the day making a list of things you need to get done, you'll feel SO good as you tick each item off. Instant feel good vibes! Plus, it'll help you keep on top of things which will help avoid stress later on.

5. Feeling Healthy.
Ughh.. this again. Notice I wrote 'feeling', rather than 'being'? Yeah, I'm cheating here a little. There are plenty of ways I make myself feel healthy, and it totally improves my mood. I'm no angel when it comes to food and exercise, but until I find that motivation to become the next top model, here are my instant cheats. Little pieces of goodness; slicing up an apple and eating it first thing in the morning. It doesn't matter if I eat junk for the rest of the day (obviously it does Jemma), making sure I do one good thing reassures me I'm not totally doomed. Sometimes I'll take a walk the local shop, just to get out and get some fresh air. It's invigorating, and breaks up exercise into easy chunks. I also love looking after my skin, giving it a deep cleanse and polish. It just makes me feel I'm looking after my body, and gives me a smile :)

6. Having Fun!
Okay, if the previous points have felt a bit like a chore, then this is the one for you. Have fun! Schedule something into your day that you'll really look forward to, and you'll be glad you did at the end of the day. Maybe it's popping into town and visiting the Art gallery? Maybe it's back to back episodes of Pretty Little Liars? (No spoilers please, I'm on S3!) Or maybe it's simply curling up with a good book. Whatever you're idea of fun is, make the time for it. You'll never regret something that made you happy.

7. Making Someone Else Feel Good.
Tell someone how pretty they look, compliment your friends recent successes, call up your mum and tell her you miss her, buy a small gift for someone for no reason, whatever. You get the point, there are a million and one ways you can make someone smile. Bonus points if you do this for a stranger, because then it feels doubley good!

8. Hope.
Making goals is what keeps me going these days. My life has completely changed in the past year or two for the better, and I owe it completely to looking forward and planning what I want to do with my life. Don't be afraid to hope for things that seem impossible. Instead, make a plan! How can you get even a little closer to this dream? Do things today to work towards this. You can do it, and it'll be so worth it. Never give up hope, and remember that half the battle is believing in yourself and trying.

Four years ago, my dream was simply to wake up without wishing that I hadn't.
Three years ago, my dream was to get my life together and feel normal.
Two years ago, my dream was to push myself to be more creative and positive.
One year ago, my dream was to be braver, and go for the things that inspired me.
Today, my dream is to keep going.

I hope you all have a fantastic day, and remember that you never know what tomorrow may hold.

Open For Business

It's gotten to the point where a fire has lit up inside me, and the fierce desires to follow my passions are scratching their way to the surface, unyielding. I've mentioned before how important blogging has become to me (here), and that's because it fuses so many of my passions into one outlet in a way that makes me happy. It's brought me some amazing opportunities so far, and I've found myself wishing I could push things further and really testing the waters to see what I can make of myself.

And then I realised; why am I sitting around wishing for things to just happen to me? Are things just magically going to get better? Well, maybe... Some people are lucky like that. But, do I really want to leave it all in the hands of luck? Certainly not. The last time I took a big chance, I really didn't believe anything would come of it, but I was proven wrong. It's taught me I should just go for things anyway, you never quite know when magic will strike! But you do actually have to go for things, to strive, to try.

So here I am, I'm going to try. If I fall, which I may; well that's just fine.

I've decided to really push myself in various ways to to get a little bit closer to my dreams. I'm doing this creatively, professionally and bravely.
Creatively; I've opened up an Etsy store. This is going to be where I put all my creations and crafty adventures for sale. I hope someone out there will like something I do, and believe in me enough to buy a little piece of me one day. I'll keep adding to this, so you should keep checking back!

Professionally; I'm doing a variety of things. I'm now offering my design services, and this is something not just for fun or creativity, but to actually put my Art  and Design education to good use. If you fancy a new blog header or button, I'm your gal! I'm offering custom blog headers for only £16, and new blog buttons for just £4. You can see a header I designed recently for the lovely Aymie below, and a blog button for Dee.

I'm also doing custom illustrations, if anyone would ever want a portrait of themselves doing, or perhaps one for someone else as a gift. I'm really keen to push myself and my work to the best of my capabilities, and would love new challenges.

I'm also branching out into freelance Social Media Management. This is something that terrifies me, which bring me to how I believe I'm being brave. It's actually what I do full time for my job at the moment, but I want to venture out into freelance work for myself, as that would give me more freedom to work on my Art/Designs and professional brand. I'm skilled and knowledgeable in social management on a professional level, but learning how to do this for myself will be an experience, I'm sure. I already have a small business lined up as my first client, which I am doing on a temporary trial basis for free, just so I can start off my freelance portfolio with a bang. I'm excited to start this adventure and take a risk in going for my dreams to be honest! Wish me luck.

And as always, I'm going to be here. I'm going to be typing away on this blog and spilling my guts to you guys, in the hopes that someone out there will care what I have to say and support me. Every time someone reads my posts, leaves me a nice comment or just generally takes an interest in my life; it baffles me a little. In the best way possible of course! So thank you.

So here's the bit I ask for your support, you lovely people behind those screens. Send me your positive vibes, buy a piece of my artwork, hire me for a custom design for your blog, book an advertising spot with me, suggest ways in which I can improve, recommend someone to my services, keep up with my adventures, or simply wish good thoughts my way? I know, all of those a big asks of you. I appreciate that. But I have to ask, because going for your dreams means not holding back. It means being brave and not worrying about falling flat on your face. It means sending out positive thoughts into the universe, and just praying some come right back to you.

Or, it means getting lucky. But guys... I have terrible luck to be honest.
Let's stick with working hard and chasing those dreams like your life depends on it, eh?

I love you all xo
